Bat Mitzvah
Bat Mitzvah
A girl becomes religious mature responsible to fulfill her commandments at the age of twelve. Bat Mitzvah Literally Bat Mitzvah means daughter of commandment and expecting the young woman now responsible to observe all of her Mitzvot like lightening the Shabbat candles. In orthodox communities, the bat mitzvah is more often marked with a family celebration than a religious ritual. If an orthodox girl wants to celebrate her bat mitzvah by reading Torah or leading a prayer service, then this is generally done in the presence of women only.
Of course the Bat Mitzvah occasion is a cause for great celebration and gratitude to G-d, and hence the Bat Mitzvah ceremony. Indeed one becomes Bat Mitzvah automatically on one‘s twelfth birthday and thus responsible, with or without a party!
Bat Mitzvah Traditions
Among traditional Jews, Bat Mitzvah was often celebrated by a small party or festive meal at the girl‘s home. More recently, in more liberal communities, as the Jewish education of girls has become nearly identical to that of boys. Thus a development of Bat Mitzvah ceremonies within Orthodoxy is the creation of women‘s prayer groups where women among themselves lead services and read Torah and haphtarah. Same development can be seen in the conservative and reform congregations where an egalitarian process evolved. In those congregations the Bat Mitzvahs girls can have an aliyah, aufruf, with amended blessings, can read the Torah, and even lead services. In some conservative congregations girls have begun to observe the occasion by giving talks from the pulpit after the service, either on the Torah portion or on some other aspect of women‘s ritual involvement.Although women are exempt from some of the mitzvot a man has to observe many women feel that they would like to keep these amendments and feel egalitarian. Women hear the Shofar, say Shema and wear a Tallit. Thus for the last century women began adorning themselves with a tallit when going to synagogue. The religious ceremony is a most important part of the Bat mitzvah yet the celebration that follows should also be a memorable occasion for the Bat Mitzvah girl. The party that can be either at home or marked with a Kiddush in synagogue is an occasion that will let everyone know that the Bat Mitzvah girl has reached the age of daughter of command.
